Software FAQs

What are the different software key options?

The software key determines how the software will validate its copy. Determining the best mode for you and your users will ensure seamless usage of Primatech products.

Important Note - The software key mode can be changed at any time within the software. This setting can be found under Utilities->Software Key in the top menu.

There are three software key modes to choose from:

Internet software keys are stored on the cloud and can be accessed from anywhere. There are two options within Internet mode that determine what the software does with the key when it is not running. Users within an organization can use either method depending on their usage needs. However, each key has a set amount of concurrent users assigned to it. In order to allow for key sharing, Internet mode has the following two options available:

Release key on close

This method obtains a key on start of the software and returns the key when the software is closed. This is ideal for environments that would like to share software keys between two or more users that always have an active internet connection.

Important - An active internet connection is always required with this mode.

Hold key on close

This method retains the key when the software is closed. In using this method, the key will not be returned to the cloud and thus will not be available to other users. This method does not require an Internet connection for each use of the software. Instead, this mode will attempt to provide a new 30 day key every time an Internet connection exists. This mode is ideal for people who travel or who may not have a consistent Internet connection.

Important - Although the key does not require an active internet connection, it does have an expiration date of 30 days from the last connection. The software will attempt to renew the 30 day time period if there is an internet connection, however if the key expires without being able to renew the software will require an internet connection before it can run.

Green Dongles

Green Dongles are ideal for machines that are have highly restrictive or no web access. These Dongles are pre-programmed by Primatech with a key that will allow our software to run continuously without an active connection to the Internet. The Green Dongle is not machine specific but must be plugged into the machine during the use of Primatech software. Cost for the Green Dongle is $100 per dongle. Please note that the number of Green Dongles available for purchase is equal to the number of licenses that were purchased.

This emergency mode issues a temporary key that allows the software to run for up to 12 hours. This mode is temporary and should only be used when the other modes are unavailable. You can initiate this mode by contacting Primatech by phone, during business hours. You will receive a response code that will active the software.

Key Mode Example

Here is an example of how you might use the software.

For this example, assume you have a two user concurrent license.

You install the software on four computers (there is no limit).

The selection of “Release key on close” and “Hold key on close” during the installation can be changed at any time when running the software (click on Utilities / Software Key).

On computer “1”, you selected “Release key on close” during the installation. You run the software and a key is transferred to your computer. You shut down the software and the key is transferred back to the server.

You then run the software again and a key is transferred to your computer. You got to Utilities / Software Key and select “Hold key on close”. You then shut down the software, but this time the key IS NOT transferred back to the server. You can now disconnect from the internet and run the software for up to 30 days without any internet connection.

Assume during the 30 days you do not have an internet connection for 20 days. You have 10 days left. You then get an internet connection, run the software, and now you receive a new lease (this is automatic) for another 30 days. Each time the key is validated, you receive a new 30 day lease.

With “Hold key on close”, you can keep the key in this mode as long as you like. There is nothing in the software that informs you for example: you had the key in this mode too long and you need to change it. The changing of key types from “Release key on close” and “Hold key on close” and vice versa is manual.

Other users will have the same options. Each user can select how they want to use the software. With this example allowing two concurrent users, up to two people can be running the software. If a third person tries to run the software, they will get a message noting users exceeded and a link allowing them to see who is using the software.

Below are a few simple questions that can help help you determine what mode is best for you.

Is this computer always isolated from the internet?

If this computer never has an internet connection then you will need to use the Green Dongle mode to use Primatech's software.

Does this computer travel?

If this is a traveling computer and there is a possibility of being in an area that will not have internet access then you should use Internet hold key on close or Green Dongle

Is this key shared between multiple users?

If this key is shared between multiple users, you should use Internet release key on close. This will allow multiple users to share one or more keys. Keys can be shared at multiple locations.

You can use any mode, but we recommend the Internet hold key on close option.
