Organizations

American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE)
The ASSE is a professional organization for occupational safety, health and environmental issues covering industry, insurance, government and education.

Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS)
CCPS identifies and addresses process safety needs within the chemical, pharmaceutical, and petroleum industries. It is sponsored by manufacturers, government agencies, consultants, academia and insurers who work in project subcommittees to define and develop guidelines for process safety. CCPS is part of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

European Process Safety Center (EPSC)
The EPSC is an industry-funded organization to promote best practice in process safety across Europe in both the prevention and mitigation of chemical accident hazards. EPSC organizes member meetings which produce information sheets, internal reports, publications and international conferences.

International Society of Automation (ISA)
ISA is a professional society that develops standards, certifies industry professionals, provides education and training, publishes books and technical articles, and hosts conferences and exhibitions for automation professionals. S84 / IEC 61511 is a notable standard for safety instrumented systems and the SP99 committee is developing a notable standard for cyber security of control systems. ISA publishes Intech, a magazine for automation professionals, and numerous books. ISA also conducts an annual Safety and Security Symposium. Notable resources offered are ISA84 Process Safety Standards and User Resources and ISA99 Security Guidelines and User Resources for Industrial Automation and Control Systems.

Major Accident Hazards Bureau (MAHB)
The MAHB provides scientific and technical support to the Directorate General Environment of the European Commission for the implementation and monitoring of the directive on Major Industrial Hazards (Seveso II Directive, 96/82/EC) concerning the processing and storage of hazardous substances. It is part of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy. The MAHB operates the Major Accident Reporting System (MARS), a database of information on major accidents submitted by Member States of the European Union to the European Commission in accordance with the provisions of the Seveso Directive.

Safety and Reliability Society (SARS)
SARS is a UK professional society for safety, reliability and engineering risk management professionals in all industries. The Society publishes a quarterly Journal which includes peer reviewed articles, produces a newsletter and runs an annual conference.

Society for Risk Analysis (SRA)
The SRA is a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, scholarly, international society that provides an open forum for all those who are interested in risk analysis. It publishes, Risk Analysis: An International Journal, that contains papers on new developments in the theory and practice of risk analysis. SRA conducts an Annual Meeting and a periodic World Congress on Risk.

Texas Chemical Council (TCC)
The TCC is a statewide trade association of chemical manufacturing facilities in Texas. It represents the Texas chemical industry in areas such as environmental protection, health and safety issues, and energy policy. The TCC and the Association of Chemical Industry of Texas (ACIT) runs an EHS Seminar each year that includes sessions on process safety management.

UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
The HSE is the national regulatory agency for work-related health, safety and illness in the United Kingdom. HSE provides information and guidance about the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) regulations that apply mainly to the process industries. The HSE funds research and issues numerous publications.

UK Health and Safety Executive - Hazardous Installations Directorate (HID)
The HID is responsible for regulating and promoting improvements in health and safety and controlling the major hazard risks present across high hazard industries and sectors. HID inspects operations; investigates accidents; enforces statutory requirements; provides advice on the nature of risks, their assessment and management; and works with partners to identify, define, document and promote good practice in the assessment / management of major hazards, including research and standards development.

US Chemical Safety Board (CSB)
The CSB is an independent US federal agency charged with investigating industrial chemical accidents and conducting investigations of chemical accident hazards. Accident investigation reports are issued and recommendations for corrective actions are made to government agencies, companies, trade associations, labor unions, and other groups. CSB has produced a series of well-received videos of major accidents.

US Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
DHS is responsible for leading the effort to secure the USA against those who seek to disrupt the American way of life. The DHS charter also includes preparation for and response to all hazards and disasters. A major focus of the DHS has been chemical facility security.

US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
EPA is responsible for protecting the public health and the environment in the US. EPA promulgated and is responsible for 40 CFR 68, the Risk Management Program (RMP) rule.

US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Emergency Management
This office provides guidance on prevention of chemical emergencies, preparation and response to environmental crises, and distribution of information to the public.

US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
OSHA is the main US federal agency charged with ensuring safe and healthful working conditions and the enforcement of safety and health legislation to protect workers. OSHA promulgated and is responsible for CFR 1910.119, the Process Safety Management (PSM) standard.

Seveso II Directive
The Seveso Directive is addressed to Member States of the European Union and requires legislation aimed at the prevention and control of major accidents in industrial establishments where dangerous substances are present in quantities exceeding threshold quantities specified in the directive.

US Department of Homeland Security, Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS)
Regulations that establish risk-based performance standards for the security of US chemical facilities. They require covered chemical facilities to prepare Security Vulnerability Assessments, which identify facility security vulnerabilities, and to develop and implement Site Security Plans, which include measures that satisfy the identified risk-based performance standards.

American Chemistry Council Responsible Care® Security Code

Repository of Industrial Security Incidents (RISI)
RISI is a database of incidents of a cyber security nature that have or could have affected process control, industrial automation or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. RISI obtains security incident data from three sources. The primary source is through private incident reports submitted by members. RISI analysts also compile information from public sources and collect incident data through data sharing agreements with strategic partner organizations. The database is available through an annual report, which may be purchased, and through on-line access on a subscription basis.
