NOTES FOR CURRENT PHAWORKS 5 USERS ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ A. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS You can install the software on Windows NT4 (SP6 and later), Windows 2000 and Windows XP. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ B. VIRUS SOFTWARE Virus software will not affect the key. This is not a possible solution for the key not working. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ C. INSTALLATION OPTIONS To upgrade your current copy, you can access of download page. There is a utility that will check your current version and download only the required files. + Stand-Alone (run with hard disk key): Install the software on one computer and activate the software key (activation code provided from Primatech) on the hard disk. Pros are that no diskette/dongle is required to run the software. Cons are that the software can only be run on one computer. The software key can be moved between hard disks without contacting Primatech. + Stand-Alone (run with floppy key diskette or USB Dongle): Install the software on any number of computers and users would share the diskette/dongle to run the software. For example, John runs the software and when he is done he gives the diskette/dongle to Mary to run the software. Pros are that an unlimited number of users can share the software. Cons are the logistics of sharing the diskette/dongle and the diskette may not work on an external USB floppy drive. When requested, the diskette/dongle is shipped activated ready to use. + Network (run with key on the network): Install the software on any number of computers and activate and share the software key (activation code provided from Primatech) off the network. Pros are that unlimited number of people can share the software. Cons are that if you are not connected to the network, you cannot run the software. The program files must be installed on a local drive. For all installations, the program files should always be installed on the local drive. The default is "Program Files\Primatech Software". If you wish to share the software using the network, only the key can reside on the network. The program files must reside on each local drive. Installing the program files on the network is no longer supported, but sharing the key on the network is available. IMPORTANT - It is possible to install the software to a network drive letter, but this is not recommended as there may be problems with the Microsoft Installer System (especially if the files are shared among multiple computers). The software may not run properly. NOTE - The CDROM or installation files (e.g., PHAWorks-5.1.msi) is required for each installation (stand alone, initial network, or additional network users) For each installation, the user must select the type of key to use. If the selected key is not available, the software will provide all options in trying to find a valid key. The installation instructions are almost identical for both stand alone and network installs. However, here are instructions noting a network install since they differ in only how to use the key. ----------- C1. MULTIPLE PEOPLE SHARING THE KEY ON THE NETWORK - SAMPLE CONFIGURATION You can still share the key off a network drive, but the option of installing the program files on the network drive is no longer supported. Each computer should have the program files installed on the local drive and not on the network in a shared location. To allow multiple people to share the same key on the network, complete the following steps: a. Install the program files on a local drive and the key on the network. b. Activate the key on the network. c. For other users, use the CDROM to complete an installation with the program files on the the local hard disk and select the key location on the network. This will not affect the key if it is already activated. This choice will only configure this second and any future installs to use the key off the network. When selecting the key directory, select the folder above the key folders (e.g., AWW1, PHAWW5)n not the key folders. This is noted on the dialog and the installer will warn you if you select a folder to far down into a directory structure. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ D. KEY LOCATIONS (TYPES OF KEYS - LOCAL, USB DONGLE, NETWORK, FLOPPY DISKETTE, NETWORK) For PHAWorks 5.1, AUDITWorks 1, Tracker 1, and Tracker Client 1 you must choose a default key type. Here are some short descriptions and uses for each key type: ----------- Local - The keys are installed in the same directory as the program files ("Program Files\Primatech Software\Key" by default). For most single user licenses this is the best key type. ----------- USB Dongle - A dongle is a piece of USB hardware that can be connected to a computer. They are ideal for users who wish to share a single license between multiple computers that are not always connected to a network. If requiring the Dongle as the installation option, there is an additional $100 charge for the Dongle. ----------- Floppy Diskette - Similar to dongles in operation. They require the user to have a standard (non-USB) floppy drive. Since floppy diskettes are far less reliable then dongles, we discourage using this option. The software may not run using an external USB floppy drive and will not work on LS-120 drives. These are not supported. ----------- Network - Install the key files on a network drive to allow sharing of key. You must use a drive letter mapping (not a UNC name) for the path to the key. If a key directory does not exist on the network, one will be created. (NOTE: Even a single user license may be used on a network as a one-user network license.) After installing a local or network key you must activate the key using the "Key Utility" in the "Primatech Software\Utilities" start menu group. Dongles and floppy keys do not need to be activated as they are shipped already activated. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ E. ACTIVATING THE KEY NOTE - You can activate the key immediately after installing the software. 1. Run "Key Utility" that is found by clicking on the Start button and then selecting Programs, then Primatech Software, and then Utility. 2. Click the "Activate" button and follow the prompts on screen. You may choose to activate the software automatically if you are connected to the internet, contact Primatech at 614-841-0025, or via email at activate@primatech.com to provide the key information to Primatech. This includes the serial number of the program you purchased. 3. If activating via the phone or email, you do not need to keep the key dialog open while waiting for the activation code. When you receive the code, run the "Key Utility" program again to enter the activation code. When activating via the internet (automatic activations), do not close the wizard until you receive a reply. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ F. I ACTIVATED THE KEY, BUT THE SOFTWARE WILL NOT RUN. WHY? THE MAIN REASONS THE SOFTWARE WILL NOT RUN ARE AS FOLLOWS 1. Users must have full access (read, write, modify change, create, update, etc.) to the key folders. When users log in, they might not have the necessary rights to the folder - "Program Files\Primatech Software\Key\PHAWW5" (e.g., for PHAWorks). 2. We recommend users have full access downward from the main key folder (by default "Program Files\Primatech Sofware\Key") that contains the "PHAWW5", "AWW1", "PSMSW2", "TRKW1", and "TRKCLW1" folders. 3. For network installations, what most locations have done is create a group for the users to have required permissions on key folders. This is also useful to prevent unauthorized users from starting the software. 4. For network installations, users must have the correct drive letter mapping for the key. 5. You cannot use UNC naming for the location of the key (network or local). 6. In the new Primatech Software Installer 1.0 and later, environment variables are no longer used to locate the key. The path to the key is a registry setting in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Primatech\\\CC\Path" (known as "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"). The user may override this global value by creating a registry value of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Primatech\\\CC\Path (known as "HKEY_CURRENT_USER"). The "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" setting is also created when a key is not found using the path in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" but a key is found in a different location (e.g., Floppy Diskette, USB Dongle, Hard Disk Key, Network Key) allowing the software to run. For example, assume you are using the key on the network. You attend a training session and want to use a USB Dongle to run the software. The software cannot find the key on the network nor any other location, so it prompts for you to provide a key location. You select USB Dongle (plug in the USB Dongle) and now a key location is created in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER". The software remembers and will use this setting until the software fails to find the key. Once you are connected to the network, the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" key location is no longer valid (no USB Dongle), but finds the key using the path in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" (network key). The software then updates the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" to use the network path which makes both "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" identical. Once the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" values match, the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" setting is deleted since "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" is the preferred location to find the key. The "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" is only meant for a temporary override of the key location. The key method used (cc or dd) is stored within the registry value "Method". The "cc" value indicates looking for the key on a local drive, network drive or floppy diskette. The "dd" value indicates looking for the key on the USB Dongle. As updating registry settings may affect how your computer runs, take care in updating these settings manually. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ G. MOVING A KEY FROM ONE COMPUTER TO ANOTHER In the "Primatech Software\Utilities" start menu group, select "Key Utility". Click on the "Move" button and follow the instructions. This procedure can be completed an unlimited number of times without contacting Primatech. When moving a key, you do not use the floppy diskette or the USB Dongle. The "Floppy" and "Dongle" keys are different keys and are not used in conjunction with the hard disk keys ("Local" / "Network"). There is help provided in the Key Utility dialog for moving the key. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ H. UPGRADING OLD VERSIONS / SETTINGS ================ OPTION 1: DO NOT UPGRADE MY CURRENT COPIES OF AUDITWORKS 1 AND PHAWORKS 5 By default, if you install AUDITWorks 1 and PHAWorks 5.1, your current versions of AUDITWorks 1 and PHAWorks 5.0x will not be modified. This allows you to evaluate the latest versions of each program without affecting your current installation. Tracker 1 will only work with PHAWorks 5.1 and later. By keeping your current installation of PHAWorks 5.0x and installing PHAWorks 5.1, you can evaluate Tracker 1 working with PHAWorks 5.1 without affecting your current installation. ================ OPTION 2: UPGRADE MY CURRENT COPIES OF AUDITWORKS 1 AND PHAWORKS 5 If you upgrade AUDITWorks 1 and PHAWorks 5 (assuming you select to install both programs), any old versions found during the installation will be removed. The old versions that will be removed are as follows: - PHAWorks 5.01 through 5.05 - AUDITWorks 1 (PSMOffice and floppy releases) No projects or user defined (created) files will be removed. Your current key and user settings will be used with the new installation. ================ NETWORK INSTALLATIONS If you have a network installation, please contact Primatech prior to upgrading your network license. ================ CUSTOM INSTALLATIONS Please note that if the software was installed using a custom installation, the key and user settings may not be upgraded. ================ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I. NOTES FOR CURRENT PHAWORKS 5 USERS IMPORTANT -- If you install PHAWorks 5.1, the associations will be changed to work with PHAWorks 5.1. For example, by double-clicking on a "HPW" file, Windows will try to open the project in PHAWorks 5.1. If you need to change the associations back to PHAWorks 5.0x, please contact your IT department or call Primatech. With PHAWorks 5.1, the new default locations for the Library, Sage database, Risk ranking for new projects, Master Team List and Global Quick Entry List will be as follows: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Primatech\PHAWorks\Version 5 If you currently have PHAWorks 5 installed, the installation program will use your old locations and not update them to the new defaults. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
