Chemical Reactivity in Process Safety

Course Description

Chemical processes by their very nature involve reactions between chemicals. Some chemicals used in industry are also inherently unstable. Chemical reaction rates and stabilities vary according to the process conditions. Indeed, processes are maintained within the safe operating envelope by controlling conditions such as temperature and pressure.

If not properly understood and controlled, chemical reactivity can lead to significant hazards and potentially serious accidents. Reactions can become runaways, unstable materials can detonate or release toxic materials, and the inadvertent mixing of incompatible materials can result in various adverse consequences such as the release of heat, blast energy or toxic materials.

This course provides an understanding of reactive chemicals and their hazards, it explains how to identify such hazards, how to protect against them, and how to address them in a process safety management program.

Objective

Provide instruction on how to address the hazards of reactive chemicals in a process safety program.

Target Audience

Personnel with responsibility for safe process operations.

Prerequisites

Prior experience or knowledge in process safety is useful.
